Mostly when one goes shopping for mugs one thinks of choosing between earthen, stoneware and porcelain mugs but never bone china mugs. But there is quite a huge difference in the porcelain; the toughest and most durable porcelain is used to make bone china mugs. The mugs are quite common in homes, though they might not actually refer to the mugs as china bone mugs, rather a great durable mug. The mugs have great intricate designs that can only be formed by the use of this porcelain. The porcelain that is used to make the mugs is actually a mixture of several elements; they are bone ash, china clay, china stone and kaolin. Bone ash from which the mugs derive their name form should be of 25% content in the mixture or more. The bone ash is responsible for the glass like non porous smooth finish of the mugs. Most of the mugs produced have 50% china bone ash, 25% kaolin and 25% china stone.
Even though the bone china mugs are strong they are still delicate, but they are less prone to chipping and are also very durable. The bone china mugs might appear similar to the normal porcelain, but they are more translucent, clearer, and durable and are whiter. One can detect a chine bone mug due to the fact that it allows for light to pass through it when placed along a tram of light. The translucent property of the mugs makes them a favorite in designs with some of them ranging ion details and being crafted cleverly so as to mingle with the effect of light. Though the china bone mugs have their strengths, they also have their weaknesses.
Considerations of buying bone china mugs
So when one goes to buy their bone china mugs one should be keen enough to ask the shopkeeper of the grading of the cup, usually the mugs are graded depending on the strength of the material used in the making of the cup. One of the weaknesses of the mugs is that they do not handle temperature very well; they tend to act as glass when subjected to rapid temperature changes. In making of drinks the mug prefers that one does the mixing elsewhere and then pours the drink in the mug. The mugs are also not a great choice for use in a microwave due to temperature variance as well as the decorations used on the mugs. Hanging of the mugs by the handles is also a practice that should not be practiced with bone china mugs.
