There are two types of thermal labels. Direct thermal labels fade away after 6 to 12 months. The more the thermal labels are exposed to the sun, direct heat or chemicals, the faster they fade off. Another type of thermal labels is those that are created through thermal transfer. This method involves the use of heat to transfer ink onto the label from a ribbon, these kind of thermal labels are permanent.
Using either wax or resin in the printing process will also determine the durability of the thermal transfer labels. Those made using resin are resistant to chemicals, those made using wax are resistant to smudge.
Some are made from both wax and resin, they are resistant to smudge.
